Waterford & Suir Valley Railway To Develop History Exhibition
The Waterford & Suir Valley Railway has commissioned WITh Care*
to research the history of railway lines in the area in order to develop a permanent exhibition at Kilmeadan Station. The Waterford & Suir Valley Railway is a voluntary community project based in Kilmeadan, Co Waterford. It was set up to develop and operate a narrow gauge railway as a tourist attraction on a section of the abandoned Waterford - Cork Railway line.
An exhibition will add to the Waterford & Suir Valley Railway experience, allowing visitors the chance to learn how and why the railway developed as well as understanding the role of the Kilmeadan Station or indeed any small station and the important service they provided for the local community. The exhibition will also focus on everyday experiences giving visitors a feeling for the day to day life on the railway.
Waterford & Suir Valley Railway are looking for volunteers to participate in this history project by giving their time to record their memories of any aspect of railway lines in the South East. Please consider helping us if you:
- Worked in any capacity on the railways
- Have strong memories of travelling on the railway
- Lived in a station house, gate lodge or somewhere near the line
It is rare to hear of the experiences of women and girls who were involved with the line, either through their jobs or through family connections. It is also difficult to learn about the experiences of people who migrated from Ireland by travelling out of the country on the railway. For this reason we are also interested in the memories of women who were connected in any way to the railway or of migrants whose last hours in Ireland were spent on the railway.
If you would like to be involved in this project by recording your memories please contact Paul Hanley 0877443314.
